pricechecker

Choosing a price intelligence platform used to be fairly simple. Did it track the competitors you cared about, and did the reports make sense?

In 2026, the questions are harder. Retail sites are more dynamic and better protected against automated collection. Catalogues are larger. Many vendors now describe their competitor monitoring software as AI-powered, which makes them harder to tell apart.

This guide covers what pricing, ecommerce and commercial teams should evaluate before committing to a platform.

Data Accuracy Comes First

Every other feature depends on whether the prices are right. A platform that records a price incorrectly, misses a promotion or shows stale data will lead to poor decisions, however good its dashboards look.

Ask vendors how they validate data as well as how they collect it:

  • How do you detect and handle failed or blocked collections?
  • How do you capture promotional and member prices?
  • Do people check the data, or is it fully automated?

Many retail sites now use bot protection and dynamic content. Platforms that cannot cope with this produce gaps that can look like real price changes.

Product Matching You Can Trust

Price comparisons only mean something when the products are equivalent. Matching on product names often fails, especially with private label goods, bundles and different pack sizes.

Look for matching based on attributes and specifications, with human verification for difficult cases. Ask how matches are maintained when products are renamed, repackaged or replaced. Matches that drift over time quietly undermine your competitor pricing analysis.

Coverage That Fits Your Market

Coverage is not the number of retailers a vendor can list. It is whether the platform tracks your real competitors, in your markets, across the channels your customers use.

Check for:

  • Marketplaces as well as retailer websites
  • Google Shopping and other comparison channels
  • Regional and international sites if you sell across borders
  • Stock availability alongside price

A competitor tracking tool covering 1,000 retailers you do not compete with is less useful than one that reliably covers the 30 you do.

Real-Time Monitoring at the Right Frequency

Different categories need different refresh rates. Consumer electronics and fast-moving promotions may need updates several times a day. Slower categories may be fine with daily checks.

A good platform lets you set frequency by category or competitor. It should also alert you to meaningful changes, such as a new promotion or a competitor going out of stock, so nobody has to go looking for them.

Automation That Stays Under Your Control

Most platforms now offer some automation, from alerts to dynamic repricing. The key question is how much control you keep.

Look for configurable rules, margin floors and approval steps. If a platform offers AI recommendations, ask how it explains them. A recommendation your team cannot understand is hard to act on and harder to defend.

Reporting, Integrations and Scalability

Data has to reach the people who use it. Evaluate:

  • Reporting: Can commercial, category and leadership teams each get views that suit their decisions?
  • Integrations: Does it connect to your ecommerce platform, ERP or BI tools, or offer exports and an API?
  • Scalability: Will performance hold as you add SKUs, markets and competitors?

Consider onboarding too. A platform that takes months to set up delays every benefit it promises.

Turning Pricing Data Into Decisions

The final test is whether the platform helps you act. Plenty of price monitoring software produces large volumes of data. Fewer turn it into clear priorities: which prices to change, which promotions to answer and where margin is being lost.

During a trial, take a real commercial question and see how quickly the platform helps you answer it. That tells you more than any feature list.

How to Prioritise Your Shortlist

The right competitive intelligence tool depends on your catalogue, markets and team. A brand monitoring MAP compliance has different needs from a retailer repricing daily.

Rank accuracy and matching first, then coverage, then automation and reporting. A platform that gets the basics right supports better competitor intelligence for years. One that does not will cost more than its licence fee.

Put Pricechecker on your shortlist. Pricechecker combines AI-led product matching with expert verification, and monitors prices, promotions and stock across retailers and markets. Request a demo to test it against your own evaluation criteria.
